Staying Safe at Sea This Festive Season: A Guide for All Families from Bilnor Staffing Solutions

Stay Safe and Enjoy the Festive Season

Whether you’re an artisan, foreman, or site manager, the festive season is a time to unwind and enjoy the beautiful South African coastline.

At Bilnor Staffing Solutions, we value the hard work you put in and want you to return refreshed, safe, and ready for the challenges of the new year.

Here’s our comprehensive guide to sea safety for all workers and their families during the Christmas period.

1. Choose Safe Beaches

  • Blue Flag Beaches, like Cape St Francis or Dolphin Beach, are great options for their high safety standards and cleanliness.
  • Avoid beaches with water quality concerns or safety risks. For example, New Brighton Beach currently has high contamination levels.

2. Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility

  • Swim in Designated Areas: Just like following safety protocols on-site, stick to areas monitored by lifeguards and observe warning flags.
  • Be Rip Current Aware: If caught in one, swim parallel to the shore until you’re free from the current.
  • Buddy System: Whether you’re relaxing as a team or with family, ensure someone is always watching swimmers, especially children.

3. Stay Prepared

  • Much like mining or construction work, preparation can prevent accidents. Keep a first-aid kit nearby for minor injuries and know the emergency number (112) for serious incidents.
  • Learn basic CPR. It’s a skill that, like knowing safety procedures on-site, can save lives.

4. Look After Your Team

  • Stay Hydrated and Protected: Bring water bottles and use sunscreen to prevent dehydration or heatstroke.
  • Avoid Alcohol When Swimming: Just as it’s unsafe to work under the influence, alcohol can impair judgment and swimming ability.

5. Respect the Environment

  • Just as miners and artisans understand the value of preserving resources, we encourage beachgoers to avoid littering and care for marine life. Small actions, like recycling or cleaning up, help keep our coastline pristine.

Kid’s Safety

Keeping little ones safe is a top priority.

Always supervise children near the water and ensure they swim in designated areas.

Equip them with flotation devices, especially if they’re not strong swimmers, and teach them to recognize safety flags and listen to lifeguards

More Tips for Ensuring Kid’s Safety:

  • Educate About Stranger Danger: Teach children not to talk to strangers or accept anything from them without your permission.

  • Safe Play Areas: Always ensure that children play in safe, designated areas, away from traffic and other hazards.

  • Car Safety: Use appropriate car seats or booster seats and ensure that seat belts are fastened securely.

  • Home Safety: Keep medicines, cleaning supplies, and sharp objects out of reach of children. Use safety gates to prevent access to dangerous areas like staircases.

  • Emergency Knowledge: Teach your kids how to dial emergency numbers and what to do in case they need to call for help.

How to Perform CPR: A Quick Guide for Emergencies

Basic CPR: It Could Save a Life.

Emergencies can happen anywhere, and knowing how to perform CPR can make the difference between life and death.

If someone isn’t breathing, remember: you can’t make things worse by trying to help. Follow these simple steps:

  • Check Responsiveness: Shake the person gently and shout, “Are you okay?”

  • Call for Help: If unresponsive, call 112 (or ask someone else to call) and start CPR immediately.

  • Perform Chest Compressions:
Place one hand on top of the other in the centre of the chest.
Push hard and fast at a depth of about 5 cm, at a rhythm of 100–120 compressions per minute (think of the beat of “Stayin’ Alive”).

  • Rescue Breaths (Optional): If trained, tilt the head back, pinch the nose, and give two breaths after every 30 compressions.

  • Keep Going: Continue until emergency responders arrive or the person shows signs of life.

Even if you’re unsure, doing something is always better than doing nothing when the person isn’t breathing.
